Avilés to Launch Mapping and Census Program for Stray Cats

The City Council of Avilés is set to implement a comprehensive program aimed at managing the growing population of stray cats living across the city. The initiative seeks to establish clear guidelines for supporting and caring for feline colonies, which rely heavily on resources provided—both intentionally and unintentionally—by local residents. The program also invites voluntary community participation to help safeguard the health and welfare of these animals, in alignment with Spain’s animal welfare legislation.
The plan involves conducting a detailed mapping and census of the stray cats within the municipality. This data will serve as a foundation for more effective planning and oversight of sterilization campaigns. By understanding the exact distribution and population size, authorities hope to carry out targeted actions that will prevent uncontrolled breeding and reduce the number of cats living in the streets.
Depending on the availability of municipal resources, the City Council may enter into cooperation agreements with various organizations and entities willing to participate in different aspects of the program. These collaborations could include NGOs, veterinary services, and community groups dedicated to animal protection.
Key components of the initiative include sterilization, as well as deworming, vaccination, and mandatory identification through microchipping—all of which will be carried out under municipal responsibility. These measures are designed not only to improve the health and safety of the cats but also to create a more balanced coexistence between the animals and the local population.
The introduction of this new municipal program will be developed in close coordination with animal welfare organizations and individual citizens already involved in caring for these animals. As part of the plan, a general coordination unit will be created within the City Council to oversee and manage the entire project, ensuring its long-term sustainability and effectiveness.
Through this structured and collaborative approach, Avilés aims to improve the living conditions of stray cats while also promoting responsible community engagement and adherence to animal welfare standards.
